This article suffers from the Western "poor isolated Asians" trope. As soon as the Anglo-Americans learned about steam engines, everybody else started signing treaties, and that showed that they were no longer isolated, see?

Plebian, Flies conquering fly-paper. Japan's most amazing accomplishment at the height of its domination of the map was losing a million men to malaria in Malaya during WWII -- out of a total garrison of 300,000. How do you lose three times more men than you have stationed there? You just set up a bureaucracy in a wooden shack in Toranomon, call it your Ministry of This and That, and have it send down 30,000 men a month without thinking about it too much. As long as your farmers keep breeding, it works. Sorta. You still get to put your colour of ink on all those maps you print...

Maxatrillion, It works both ways. Are there more Koreans in Japan or Japanese in Korea?

MDto, You should log off your computer when you leave it. Some very stupid person has been writing ignorant foolish posts in your name while you were away.

Valerian Tiger, Well said. The problem here is that a lot of people think the full aim and content of history is the justification of whatever they like about today, the "It all led up to wonderful me" syndrome.

Red, You've posted your little whimper the wrong place. There is no mention of Americans and atom bombs in this at all. You may be on autopilot, and need to get yourself under control again... Good luck.
