  6. Giant Cheeseball, Not bad -- but not necessarily correct. I'm happy with two, both of which are zero, the reason being that zero is not quite like other numbers, it's a class by itself in rather the same sense that transcendentals are. That's why we don't allow it to be a divisor, or say that if it divides something then the answer is NAN or not-a-number, or "It's not a number," or something of that sort. Since not-a-number is not a number, clearly there is a difference in zero's being or kind for it to be able to produce it [or a whole lot of them :-) ], don't you think? Cheers, -dlj.

  7. Elvie, There's a Red and Black Pen video that answers exactly that (very good) question. I forget the answer, but it's something pretty clean and neat, maybe 1/sqrt(2)i or something. But don't take my word for it. Like I said, I forget, and that doesn't look quite right to me, because that root-2 ought to vanish somewhere in the operation or the proof, oughtn't it? Or maybe it's related to the 45-degree angle, which gets you up to half the rotation toward 90 degrees, and the sine of which is 1/sqrt(2)? The Black and Red Pen guys are very witty -- and it's worth remembering that Richard Feynman got from about Grade VII through Second year college depending on just a single trick of the sort they do in all their videos to keep the stupider teechers off his back.

  10. Gabriella, Don't quit now: this stuff is useful, in fact necessary, if you're ever going to understand how the electricity comes out that plug in the wall. The majority of engineering students are now women in some places, and my eldest daughter, an engineer before she became an investment banker, made solid six figures for running 60+ plants -- simply because she has this stuff under control. -dlj.
