  1. At 1:20 they miss a third thing, apart from stiffening resistance and winter: the Germans ran out of gas. Guderian, at the gates of Moscow, didn't have the fuel to push ahead. The whole thing was a ridiculous, or perhaps necessity-driven, gamble. If they couldn't rely on Soviet oil supplies, then it was win -- quickly before the gas ran out -- or die. They died.
