In Toronto the trucks are in the first generation of semi-automation of containers -- and the result is I have to pick a dozen or so pieces of wind-blown garbage off my front lawn every Tuesday. They're neither better nor worse than the manually slung methods of five or ten years ago, but one could hope that technical innovation might make clean tidy pick-ups a criterion in the mix.
