Android is a flavor of Linux, which is a very popular and diverse subset of the Unix/GNU family of software. The PLA has published a Red Flag Linux, at about the same time as, and rather similar in design to, the NSA's very compartmentalized and hence arguably secure Linux. I sorta don't think they'll have too much trouble -- and of course they have all those very bright Finns from the Nokia universe already on their payroll. The comparison of markets is interesting. Middle class Americans versus middle class Chinese? Uh, there are more middle-class Chinese than there are Americans, period. At least the United States' version of Americans. And then there are twice as many Latin Americans as there are non-Latin ones -- and many of them happy to buy Chinese goods if it means sticking a thumb in Uncle Sam's eye. Long story short: Trump doesn't look very good at his job, does he?

@nemanjastankovic7200 Sorry, are you asking did they leave back-doors for the US government to spy through? If so, the answer is I don't know. The back-door in C was thought of as sort of a joke in 1972, with no national security spying either intended or imputed to Dennis and Brian, K&R. It was removed pretty quickly. I don't know what you mean by "all the code" not eing there. Even though Linux calls itself a kernel it seems to me any given vaiation can differ from any other by a few lines here and there, so I'm not sure what you would mean by "the code." Cheers, -dlj.

@worstvideosever4297 There may be a criterion or two by which the US is "the richest in the world," e.g. total capitalization of all stocks traded on exchanges located within its borders. (I dunno: I wouldn't be surprised if somebody snuck up on me and told me Lichtenstein or Grand Bahama was ahead on that one, but...) Query: what criterion did you have in mind?

@ragingtyga It's very irritating that my post doesn't come out next to the post of yours that I was criticizing, and I can't find it now. As I recall, though, you claimed that foreign companies were forced to give part equity and full access to their IT resources to foreign companies operating in China. Both of these are false. I share a good deal of your sour feeling about the present government over there. Their nationalism is a damn shame, and Xi is badly served by the number of ass-licking hangers-on who seem to pop up to worship him. This, however, does not allow you free rein to just make stuff up -- but it seems to be a pretty steady habit of yours. Many of your posts in this column contain gross exaggerations and outright fabrications about China, barstool wisdom of the sort that rightwing drunks normally spew about anybody they don't like. You could be better than that: there's enough accurate material around to support the cases you want to make.

@ragingtyga Your previous claim, Tyga, was that companies, plural and implicitly in general, were forced to give up equity to do business in China. In support of that you now say that Elon Musk is occupying some property owned by a different company? And you leave hanging some dire thought that this will work out badly "years later"? Um. I think perhaps you need to think a wee bit about what "evidence" means. So far you have simply stated an untruth and justified it with an irrelevancy.

In real life, which you should investigate some time, both American and Chinese companies follow local laws except when they don't. In the current case Google is extremely exposed, but you will notice that they are taking extreme care to assure the Chinese that they are following Trump's diktats as narrowly as possible and are doing everything possible to lessen the long term harm being done by this ridiculous little man. Dennis Chu Utterly. In part it's a matter of his not understanding what America is all about. "His eyes glaze over when you get to the Fourth Amendment," one of his failed briefers famously said. He doesn't know anything about the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, or even the most elementary facts about hos laws are made and administered. Fundamentally, however, it's a matter of his rather peculiar personality. He weak, unusually self-centered, needy, uninterested in fact but highly skilled at acting, at hunting for people's weak spots, and at the sales skills of flattery and selective presentation of opinions. You'll notice that being thoughtful, knowledgeable, intelligent, or patriotic don't appear on this list. He's a sporadically successful, frequently failed, con-man.

Dennis Chu Don't be so pessimistic, Dennis. The American people are fundamentally sound. 'Course half of them are stupider than the median, and even more than that are stupider than average, so you get some rough spots from time to time, but they'll pull through. As for the Constitution, it strikes me as an astonishingly robust piece of work, though with some faults -- most of them the little victories of the slave-holders of 1787~89 when they were putting it together. You shouldn't be surprised: large numbers of American politicians are intelligent and civilized, and the Constitution is read and understood by people in all walks of life. Be of good cheer.
