(Maersk, btw, are stunningly competent and a pleasure to do business with.) The voices inserted, talking about volatility and price increases, are industry shills, repeating industry talking points. Prices paid by shippers, however, will be volatile in places. In my experience, shipping forwarders and brokers are the most successful bunch of thieves since Ali Baba's Forty. The ones who don't need to go to jail should probably be locked away in padded cells at their local Hospital for the Badly Confused.

What the public wants and what the supplier offers may very well be quite different, and in the few cases where we're very very lucky a market emerges to let us reach some sort of compromise. I think that's the best one can ever hope for. managed expectations are your more likely outcome.

  28.  @JonathanMaxwell27  Four majors (UPS, FedEx, the Post Office, and Amazon) and a whole lot of minors in package delivery is not an oligopoly -- and if Amazone hadn't been there it's pretty easy to imagine Japan's Red Hat or some European company moving in, had there been a real non-economic situation. What would be interesting to see might be legislation making it 1940s-style easy for the Teamsters to get into Amazon's hair.

Worse, with his withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership he goes to war against the industries in which America is strongest, Silicon Valley, Big Pharma, Hollywood, the whole information- and research-based 30 or 40 percent of the economy. All of these sectors, companies, investors and workers depend upon patents, copyrights, and the rule of law and respect for negotiation. TPP protected these, and with a strong -pro-US bias. Trump is undermining them all.
