The New Mexicos had the most modern fire control of any of the old BB's at the time of Pearl Harbor as a result of that refit. This and the lack of damage resulted in any sort of big refit being delayed until 1944, The Missiappi was the only US BB to mount single 5-38's (in 8 gunhouses) along with 13 quad 40mm and 40 20mm (presumably some single, some dual). BUORD's objective was to have all the old battlewagons mount 8X2 5 inch (presumably the single would have been replaced by dual) mounts, forty 40mm (which she exceded) and forty 20mm. Post war she was picked to replace the Wyoming as the gunnery trials and training ship. Wyoming was moored at one side of the pier, Mississippi on the other and the crew was transferred from one to the other en masse. They were then given one week to transfer as much material and fittings as they could carry from the Wyoming to the Mississippi. Some may wonder about the "128" hull number in the shot of her firing a Terrier. This was because she was rerated from BB-41 to AG-128 when she changed roles. "AG" means "Miscellaneous Auxiliary" and was used for training vessels as well as other types. http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/49/49idx.htm
