  1. Artificial ventilation helped, although in my father's experience sleeping on deck was allowed. Remember though, these were tougher men. My dad was born in 1918, he and his shipmates had grown up in a world without air conditioning. In dad's case, in Texas. The one air conditioned building in town was the movie theater, which advertised it was "refrigerated", So you grew up without a lot of the comforts we take for granted. Interesting enough, as he was an Electronics Technician, his battle station was in the one air condition compartment aboard his carrier, the Combat Information Center. The AC wasn't for their comfort, but to prevent the electronic gear from melting.

  4. Did it hit the ship? No. And nobody has used Shrapnel since 1918. When as a result of the explosion of a HE filled shell, the metal shards are called shell splinters. Yes, call me a pedant

"His Majesty's Naval Base, Singapore, also Her Majesty's Naval Base, Singapore (HMNB Singapore), alternatively known as the Singapore Naval Base, Sembawang Naval Base and HMS Sembawang, was situated in Sembawang at the northern tip of Singapore and was both a Royal Navy shore establishment and a cornerstone of British defence policy (the Singapore strategy) in the Far East between the World Wars. From 1921 to 1941 it was a base of the China Station and from 1941 to 1958 it was a base for the Far East Fleet. Today, it is a commercial dockyard but British military activity still exists at the British Defence Singapore Support Unit (BDSSU)."

  6. No - X turret was the higher of the two after turrets. In order from bow to stern A-B-X-Y, So far as I know, the RN never had a Z turret, so Y was the aftermost. It also didn't use the letter C, so even though the five turret Dido class had its third turret forward, it was designated as P. Prior to this, P and Q had been reserved for midships turrets. Seven turreted HMS Agincourt totally broke with tradition, her turrets were designated by days of the week.
