It had bases all over the world that would need this sort of maid of all work. Did the USN have such a huge fleet of LCVP's, LCM's, LCT's etc that a substantial portion could be diverted to this work. Or was the US Army's fleet of small freighters (FS and FP) take up the slack (at 450-500 tons, they seem large for the task)
