Actually, I have always thought the Defiant and Roc were influenced by the success the Brisfit in the Kaiser War (remember the senior RAF staff were, to a man, veterans of the Western Front) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_F.2_Fighter. Of course , things had changed in two decades - but they were far from the only people who thought September 1, 1939 was really November 12, 1918

The F4U was a dog of a carrier based aircraft and gained the nickname" "ensign Eliminator" Eric Brown, while acknowledging its good points was highly critical of its take off and landing performance. The USN tried one squadron of F4U's (VF-17) and the result was such a disaster that the USN fobbed them off on the USMC as land based aircraft. and they weren't accepted until the design was modified. The date of acceptance was April 1944, which meant none went to sea in the USN until December 1944

But the Worcester's 6 inch guns didn't work and they were mothballed as soon as decently possible.

@johnshepherd8687 Which was the whole reason behind their design, From the NAVWEAPS Site "These guns did not prove reliable in service, possibly because of the high rate of fire and need for any-elevation loading. Another contributing cause was that they used a dual projectile hoist system - one for AP and one for HC/AA shells - which proved to be a source of jamming."

Partly, no doubt to give an alternate source of production if a couple of the factories producing those high demand items were bombed out. The same reason the Grumman was forced to use the Wright R-2600 instead of the P&W R-2800 and North American was forced to not proceed with its R-2800 powered B-25 variant bur=t had to stick with the R-2800/ Don't put all your eggs in one basket. "The progression of the B-25 to the NA-98X is a very natural one. Originally, North American wanted to build the B-25 with Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines. These were not made available, and the reliable Wright engines were used. By 1944, many B-25s were being field modified by the addition of more .50 caliber guns. Side blister packs were being retrofitted onto aircraft that weren't manufactured with them. The 75mm cannon was commonly removed and replaced with .50 guns as well. Improving the performance of the B-25 could also serve as a low cost alternative to the expensive Douglas A-26B. At some point, this aircraft was destined to be built. The NA-98X was designed to get the most performance out of the existing B-25 platform. To that end, B-25H-5-NA SN 43-4405 was modified. The wing tips were squared off allowing for an increase in the aileron surface area. A new low drag turret canopy was developed. The 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney engines boosted the power significantly."
