In the 1930's the 2.95-inch was declared obsolete, being replaced by the 75mm Pack Howitzer M1, but apparently no one ever bothered to cut the orders to dispose of the beasts. So a bunch, along with their ammunition, remained in storage in the Philippines, pretty well forgotten, As far as the US Army was concerned, they no longer existed, weren't in any manuals and Fort Sill wasn't running any classes on them. Then the Japanese invaded. Twelve were dusted off and handed to a battalion of the 23rd Artillery (PS) of the Regular Army's Philippine Division and about another 50 were issued to the Philippine Army. The US purchased 132 between 1899 and 1904.

The US Army defines small arms as 60 caliber and less. Anything larger is a gun/howitzer/mortar./launcher - the first three of which fall under the definition of "cannon"
