@geodkyt The BAT didn't use a spotting rifle, the MOBAT used a Bren as a spotting gun and the WOMBAT used the M8C. BAT's and MOBAT's converted to use the M8C were called CONBAT's

And having led an AT platoon equipped with the M40A1 106mm, I can state that the M8C worked like a charm

@justforever96 Having been an AT platoon leader, if someone exposed himself two klicks away thinking he was safe, we might just kill him on general principles to remove him from the gene pool. You have to be judgmental, though. Do you really want to give away your AT position (remember, you're paid to kill tanks)

And the Ontos had tin can armor that PAVN DShK's turned into swiss cheese and their RPG's turned it into a smoking pile of scrap metal

The elevation mechanism has two handwheels. The outer is for quick, coarse elevation, the smaller inner for fine adjustments. Once you are satisfied, you announce "Fifty On the Way" and pull the inner handwheel towards you. If that round hits the target, you announce, ONE-OH-SIX ON THE WAY!" and push inner handwheel in. The handwheel is connected by Bowden Cables to the firing mechanism on the 50 and 106.

OK, assume you produce a 50 BMG spotter round matched to the 106 1) You still need to box and ship it separately 2) It won't function in the M2 as it won't produce enough recoil (and since it's shipped as individual rounds, not as belts, you'll have to belt it up to tyry to use in a MG) 3) Picking up 50 BMG Ball, Tracer, etc and using it in a notional 50 BMG spotting rifle defeats the purpose of the whole exercise as it doesn't have the same trajectory as the 106. Outside of that, it's a great idea

@lairdcummings9092 They were NOT. The BAT used optical sights and the MOBAT with a Bren came after the M40A1/M8C combination.

@lairdcummings9092 The WOMBAT came out in 1964, the M40A1 in 1955 (the BAT in 1953)

Correct, the M27 105mm Recoilless was a failure. Since they used different ammunition, they designated 105mm Mark 2, the 106. The same way the US Army had 3 inch and 76mm guns in WW2 and the British 77mm tank gun was the same caliber as the 17 pounder (3 inches = 76.2mm)

Ever been in a moving tank? You're deaf. How about one that's buttoned up? You're almost blind.
1
@nonobaddog Why not? Hitting a moving target (a steel panel running on railroad track on the range) was required to qualify as a 106 gunner - my whole platoon , even I, accomplished it - and used the spotting round to get the aim correct

Nothing to do with Browning. It's the M48A2 50 Caliber Spotting Round

Yeah, I'd LOVE to see some bubba come up with a sportsterized M40A1

And tin can armor that becomes swiss cheese when a DShK shoots at it. It becomes a smoking pile of scrap metal if hit by an RPG. Both of which the PAVN had in Vietnam.

So what do other armies do with their weapons?

You're hallucinating. Had a platoon of 106's and the springs are the same length
