  1. I can't help but compare this to the M1 Carbine of 30 years later. The 30 Cal Carbine cartridge is well known for approximating the 32 Cal in effectiveness and makes you wonder if a generation of German machine gun and mortar crews and engineers could have carried a modified version (full length stock and handguard - that exposed barrel is asking for trouble in a military arm - maybe with bayonet lug) during the Great War. And yes, an easy way to strip and clean it. Of course, everybody was thinking of rifles that could be employed in platoon volleys at a thousand meters, so I doubt they'd get their foot in the door...but perhaps a lost opportunity.
