Used car values drop fast, not only in the USA. Car makers have to get their business going, hence the constant ad. bludgeoning of the public to buy new models, while the older ones are still in running condition. Those end up in junkyards. That's the way consumer society works.

Because if GM wanted to only recruit medium build or lean, it would have too many worker positions left to fill. 60% of US stock is either overweight or obese. Being picky doesn't help.
