  12. As I've said elsewhere, MBA is a non-profit conservation and research aquarium. It is not an animal circus like SeaWorld. And no. Not all zoos and aquaria are "prisons". A lot of animals today actually survive only in zoos. They'd have long gone extinct if not for them. Breeding and repopulation programs are important, as well as research. They aren't always magically better off in the wild, especially if their natural habitats are already gone in the first place. The only real problems arise when it comes to zoos and aquaria which are built solely for profit or to entertain. In which case, you'll see animals being forced to perform or kept in horrible conditions that don't remotely resemble their wild habitats.

  16. I admire him for what he did, but I don't believe his vision will ever happen. Islamic leaders and clerics are, for the most part, fanatical. Ignorance keeps them in power. And it's in their best interests to suppress anything that changes the status quo. That said, most immigrant Muslims are moderate to outright liberal. That's part of the reason why they migrated in the first place. Several of the Muslim-Americans I know were refugees from Iran, back when the Shah was ousted and the Ayatollahs took power. They hate Islamic fundamentalism just as much as anyone else.

  20. The sad truth is that no matter how much you dumb down the concept of evolution so laymen can understand, there will always be those who will not. Not can not, but will not understand. Because they're afraid to. As simple as evolution is really (and something observable even in nonliving things), admitting that it occurs destroys the comforting illusion that we're a special handpicked creation nurtured by an invisible skyfather (or mother). Cognitive dissonance. If admitting the truth hurts too much, deny it.

  22. I'm disappointed. You mention Dioscorea rotundata but fail to mention the purple yam, Dioscorea alata. The latter is the yam most commonly confused with the Okinawan sweet potato. Because both are purple. However, purple yams have a pleasant distinctive vanilla-like smell that sweet potatoes lack.

It's a resource that takes hundreds of millions of years to form, from vast quantities of dead plant matter. Hence why they're known as fossil fuels.

  29. It's still the same in my home country. There people will stare at you for jogging. Especially given that most people you pass by are already working their asses off doing hard menial labor even if you get up at like 5AM. It's starting to change a bit now that the country is more developed and the middle class is growing, but jogging (or cycling) on the roads is still looked at with a bit of disdain. They're associated with rich people who have nothing else to do.

  38. Tikaani Laogai Jesus. That rape comment incident has become so warped in translation. It's quoted out of context. Consider the situation: it happened during the 1989 Davao City hostage crisis. Prisoners rioted and took several missionaries hostage. They raped the women, including the Australian missionary in question. She later died (by a botched sniper shot), along with several other hostages and most of the rioters. It sounded bad because Duterte was recounting the incident in Tagalog, which is not his native language. Further bastardized by being translated word-for-word to English.  "Mayor should have been first" is a stilted version of what it actually meant in context. That it was massive waste since the woman was so beautiful, that not even he as the mayor had ever been (sexually) with a woman that beautiful before. Yes it was crude and tasteless, but he wasn't saying that he should have "raped her first" as so many international news articles later spun it off as. And yes, he's obviously not the shining bastion of political correctness. LOL. But even so, he is still far more liberal in terms of policies than virtually all of his peers. That irreverence for the status quo is actually what makes him able to do that, in a country where conservative Christians have historically vetted most politicians and still strongly influence legislature. He does openly admit to extrajudicial killings, which is horrible in its own way. But again, context. This is the Philippines we're talking about. It's barbaric in terms of human rights, but it may actually be the only remaining solution in a country where crime and corruption have become so rampant. It's either that or become another Mexico. But that's not the point. The point is that he is nothing like Trump.

But you CAN impeach a president for colluding with Russians to gain power with the promise of easing embargoes though.   41. @Anonymous Cringey Guy Actually, it's the Southern heritage. Both the Democrats and the Republicans were Yankees in the Civil War. The only difference is who thought war was a good idea (Republicans) and who thought it wasn't (Democrats - specifically, the traitorous Copperheads). Hence why the South switched parties immediately when the Democrats stopped supporting segregation under the New Deal Democrats post-Depression era and hijacked the ailing Republican party. It's the reason why the party of Lincoln is now waving the flag of his enemies.

When evidence started piling up from NASA and international organizations, they switched to saying it wasn't our fault. Nowadays most of them are saying not to worry because life will survive. smh

And it's for shale gas primarily. It's effect is negligible in terms of supplementing fossil fuel reserves and at a much higher cost in terms of other resources used - mainly freshwater - which is why it's so controversial in the first place. Fossil fuels will still run out. Whether you like it or not. And it can not be renewed. Not in our lifetimes. Probably not within our species' lifetimes. If ever.

  49. @Grey Silverback, I disagree. Environmentalism isn't about living like a caveman, it's about efficiency. The "bare necessities" approach is often far more wasteful. The natural ally of conservation is science. Discovering ways of cutting down resource consumption or even renewing resources is pretty much the end goal of technology.
