One aspect, I think, is spelling. Spoken out loud, a lot of closely related languages actually sound very similar, to the point that you can understand bits and pieces of it. But they're sometimes spelled very differently. This applies especially to the Romance languages which adopted different spelling rules over the centuries. Same with the Austronesian languages. Filipino balay, Balinese bale, Fijian vale, Hawaiian hale, and Māori whare look nothing like each other. Until you realize that the Māori digraph "wh" is pronounced with a sound in between /f/ and /h/.
