  22.  @harryrussell154  Your comment is just complete misinformation. NATO is not a political organisation. It is a defense pact. They do not tell the member countries what to do and Ukraine would be free to run their own country any way they see fit. They would not be "at the mercy" of anyone. However, Ukraine does want to join the EU which is a political organisation and they would have to go by all the NATO rules. Why would they want to do that instead of remaining completely independent? Because it has financial benefits, social benefits, and political benefits. Signing a long-term treaty stating that you will never join a defense pact is quite problematic because you want to option to change your mind if the situation changes in the future. Further, the current Russian aggression has caused Sweden and Finland to choose to join NATO because of the Russian risk. So Russian aggression also makes it more likely for Ukraine to join.
