  1. @curiousemu6462  The Europeans that comment on utube are very critical of our roads being too wide. Each individual city has the responsibility of providing its own roads. Each individual county has the responsibility of paving its own roads. Each individual state has the responsibility for paving its own highways. The federal government has the responsibilty of paving its own roads. When each person is only responsible for his own part, there will be a hodge-podge of designs and quality across the country, and nothing matches. You could call the interstate highways "top notch." But all other roads are intended to be adequate for the purpose. If they were built and maintained in top notch condition, our taxes would go up. Municipalities are always struggling to juggle their finances because Americans do not like high taxes. Most Americans are not very community-oriented at all. Having perfect infrastructure that the community can be proud of is not high on our list of priorities (and the Europeans are very critical about that). It is temperature changes (both in the extreme cold north and the extreme hot south) that causes the cracks. Temperature change causes matter to expand and contract and that cracks the pavement. In addition, water expands when it freezes. So when water gets into the slightest little crack, it expands and breaks the concrete. We have ice in the winter all the way down to Miami. It is a constant struggle for them to keep repairing that, and the road crews are busy night and day.
