The fact that the Americans dropped atomic bombs on Japan saved hundreds of millions if not billions of lives. The only reason that there hasn’t been a nuclear war since World War II is because the leaders of the countries that have the bomb have seen the hard facts of how terrible it would be to use them again. Let’s hope they don’t forget.

Anthrax! Tanks from Africa may well be contaminated with anthrax which would be highly destructive if introduced into Europe. If I remember correctly, when the US army brought tanks back from the Middle East, the tanks had to go through extensive cleaning in order to try and make certain that tanks contaminated with anthrax did not spread the disease back to the nine states.

The logistics tale of the tank? Your analysis is very good but you don’t include a good discussion about the tremendous amount of logistics required by tags.

@mvfc7637 No idea. Fortunately not my job. However, the battleship is an example where it took 2 or 3 decades for new technologies (airplanes, aircraft carriers, radar, etc.) to mature sufficiently to render it obsolete. The fact that ATGMs and drones were not mature enough in the last 4 or 5 decades (and may not yet be mature enough yet) does not rule out the possibility of the tank becoming generally agreed to be obsolete because of new ATGM and drone technologies that are today evolving rapidly. Whether or not the tank is obsolete is not my main concern per se. What I really want to encourage is a lively debate about the role of the tank in the future that results in doctrinal changes that adequately address the rapidly changing capabilities of ATGMs and drones. Should that debate not occur, we may well see another May 1940 Blitzkrieg as happened to France, a Pearl Harbor as happened to the USA, or a Yom Kippur war as happened to Israel.

@mvfc7637 Well, it looks like we're going to get a valuable data point on this subject in the next few weeks with Russia and Ukraine apparently about to re-enact the 1943 Battle of Kursk with the Russians playing the part of the Germans and the Ukrainians playing the part of the Russians. As in the 1943 Battle of Kursk, everyone today knows where, when, and with what forces the Russians will attack just as everyone knew that information about the Germans in 1943. In the 1943 battle, the "breakthrough" power of armor did not give the Germans a victory. Let's hope history repeats itself now!
