Are EV carrying ships safe? Considering that EV fires really can't be extinguished, should any ships carry EVs? For that matter should EVs be allowed to park in parking garages both above ground and underground?

Will the CCP Chinese Navy go to the Red Sea to protect Chinese ships? I don't think they have any ships that could do it, but it would be quite a statement.

@wrp3621 Electric vehicles parked in underground garage is located under major buildings in major cities. Seems like a perfect terrorist weapon. No one’s going to question that you’re driving into a garage with a car that doesn’t have any obvious explosives in it but if the car catches fire next to other electric vehicles. The resulting fire and smoke and toxic fumes will render the building uninhabitable for quite some time. Electric vehicles are great! Before 9/11, nobody thought the airplanes were dangerous to buildings. I wonder what date the electric vehicle terrorist attack will occur on? Let’s hope the day do something catchy like 411.

Don’t make Canadians mad! My understanding is that the Geneva convention was created because of the horrible things that Canadian troops did during World War I. Even today, it is thought that the Canadians consider the Geneva convention to be more of a checklist of what to do in time of war or when they get mad.

Sal, Peter Zeihan knows LESS about geopolitics than he does about shipping! Peter's specialty is to assemble a collection of somewhat related facts, then make sweeping generalizations about the future based on that collection. In short, Peter is a snake oil salesman who probably gets paid by banks, political groups, etc. to try and get investors confused. His claim about the drop in cargo is a great example of the kinds of "facts" Peter assembles - facts that sound TRUTHY with absolutely no backup.

What about the other ships in the port and how long will the port be closed? Doing amateur bridge collapse analysis is all well and good, but I think your expertise would be better. Spent in talking about the impact on shipping of the other ships import, and whether or not the port will be unusable and hell for how long.

@MasterChief37 they do have a lot of ships, but most of their ships have very limited range. Also, I’m not sure that they have the logistics support to maintain a set of ship so far from China.

@timmonk47 interesting. My assumption is that Yemen is using Chinese supplied weapons. Is that true? If so, it would be rather amusing if the Chinese navy went to the Red Sea to protect Chinese ships from Yemen forces equipped by the Chinese.

Question: how will a new Trump administration affect US shipping? Obviously, environmental impact statements will no longer be required for major projects that might assist shipping even if they do destroy the environment. Also, crony capitalism will probably become the order of the day in the shipping market. For example, efforts to revitalize the military capability for shipping will probably be supplanted by contracts to the Chinese and the Russians and the Arabs and countries that do not have the best interest in the United States at Hart, but who will be more than happy to give bribes to Trump officials. Right now, your perspective is that shipping is something that should work that should obey laws that should be of reasonable cost and safety. Under a Trump administration, all of that will change and it will be become about bribes and crony, capitalism and pollution. Please, get on board!

Did the Navy learn anything? Yes, sounds like the Navy really screwed the poach on these LCS. The key question however is did the Navy actually learn anything from this debacle? If the answer is yes, then it’s not so bad. If the answer is no, and we are really really screwed as a nation.

Also, since Elon now claims that he can build a hyper loop tunnel all the way under the Atlantic ocean from New York to London for only $20 billion and fly vehicles through that tunnel at 3000 miles an hour or more, do we really need shipping in the future? @rogerstarkey5390 So, I guess your prediction would be that the ship that is burning in the Baltic will end up having a bunch of Evies that were in golfed in flames, but that did not have batteries that participated in Burdick. I actually hope that’s the case but I’m skeptical, especially considering pictures of electric vehicles engulfed in flames all by themselves that fire departments can’t seem to put out.

Cell, why did this conference waive the $3000 registration fee in your case? That seems like a no-brainer unless of course they hate you. Do they hate you? Because if they don’t hate you and they didn’t waive the fee for someone who would give them a lot more in-depth coverage than normal reporters, obviously the maritime industry has its head so far up its ass that they can’t possibly sail the seas safely.
