Brazil: #1 choice. You get a good passport for your child, who becomes a Mercosur citizen and is also eligible for Spanish citizen after 2 years of residence in Spain (as mentioned about Puerto Rico). I usually say Brazil is not a good option for a trifecta, but a "free" passport like that is a wonderful addition to any portfolio.

Agreed, though Brazil offers some soft freedoms that some foreigners will love (and they do!). From the taxation point of view it's not good (except for the still valid exemption on inland dividends) and trying to keep an active bank account as a non-resident is a nightmare.

@AKSmith15 depends on what you want. The passport is great. If you want to become resident forever, it's up to you but it's not a good tax choice (unless you find specific investment options with low or even zero tax). If you decide to leave and keep your local investments, you are done: a non-resident bank account costs US$ 200/month and investments become basically frozen.

@victording6698 no, it's Spain. Portugal requires 5 years of residence.

@luoma9040 From the Spanish government website: "Nacionalidad por Residencia: Residir en España de forma legal, continuada e inmediatamente anterior a la solicitud durante los siguientes plazos: (3) 2 años para los nacionales de países iberoamericanos (*incluido Brasil*), Andorra, Filipinas, Guinea Ecuatorial, Portugal o personas de origen sefardí." Clear enough?

Short answer: the child (abroad) has to get drafted at age 18 in some embassy/consulate and can be freed at age 28. That's the case for those who don't show up in Brazil. In fact, male Brazilians are screened and just a small percentage has to spend 12 months performing any service. Depending on his other citizenships, he could be freed from all the other drafts and have nothing to perform in Brazil - I didn't delve deeper into that possibility, though.

@jeffweingrad4658 it's a legacy brand issue. I can't blame them after going to another legacy brand country myself. Probably many of them are not aware of future IRS or FATCA issues for their babies.

@donaldlee8249 couldn't find any clear info about it. Surely possible but probably very burocratic.

@miguelgustavobohorquezblan3754 exactly. I posted a link to the Spanish gov site but it was removed.

@miguelgustavobohorquezblan3754 that's quite possible...
