  2. NERDS!!! Sorry, couldn't help myself. But for people living in industrialized nations they mostly still have a long way to go living off the exploitation of the developing parts of the world before the majority will stop caring about space, at least superficially. It's too aspirational and engaging a subject for too many people. And now that China has its own orbiting station and is actively sending people into space and preparing their own missions to the moon and beyond there is that jingoistic space-race back in play. The whole thing also makes a great distraction from other problems, so there is an advantage to keeping the general public engaged with projects around space exploration and travel.
