  5.  @autohmae  Sorry, but that was Nixon who nominated Powell to the Supreme Court. Happened in 1971-'72. But your right about how the Powell Memo helped pave the way for Project 2025. Powell was one of the founding fathers of the modern American plutocracy.

  12. As a long time insider I'll say that the US is a crazy place. As big as it is and with as diverse a population and variety of cultures and religions and ideologies of all sorts it probably shouldn't work at all. Theoretically it could all tear apart at the seams at any time and seems to try every generation or two, but in practice there are a few oligarchs and plutocrats overseeing the greatest kakistocracy the world has probably ever seen along with a most impressive military/industrial/police/prison complex that manages and maintains the status quo. It takes a certain willing suspension of disbelief to live here successfully.

But I've always watched the Law and Order series and other cop shows like NYPD Blue (but I had to stop with the Chicago show - it was too much) knowing they, like any action movie, are entertaining escapism. That Ice-T and Richard Belzer are/were on SVU only made that particular show that much more entertaining for me. Ice-T who performed the song "Cop Killer" with his band Body Count - the absurdity is most entertaining.

  25. I get that they are still a problem, but hasn't Last Week Tonight talked about HOA's at least once or twice already? I'm surprised there aren't more incidents of people reacting violently to some of these managers. People have their whole lives invested in these homes and I bet the ones who get really screwed over feel like they don't have much left to live for.

Living in a single-wide that's almost fifty years old - it's mostly crap and probably out of code in a variety of ways but it's paid for, doesn't leak too much, and the property taxes this year were all of 65 dollars. I think of it as an over-sized Tine House, but like you said, the problem is the lot rent which is ridiculous here (Denver) too. The flip-side to that is that I wouldn't be able to find even a studio apartment or a converted garage for the same amount most anywhere in the metro area. When this gets to be too much I'm going to have to find some place more rural to move to or maybe go full nomad - I'm getting to the age where traveling in an RV isn't all that unusual. Maybe I'll start up another van-life channel and become YouTube famous!

Not everyone who works in a library has one, but usually the director and other people running a library, or who work at a specialized library or archive, have a bachelors or masters degree or sometimes even a doctoral degree in Library and Information Sciences.

  36.  @jenniferstine8567  You can usually watch the full episode from some random YouTube uploader on Sunday evening after (or sometimes while) the show was (is) being broadcast. Do a search on YouTube using the show name and you'll probably find it if you scroll down a bit. It really is worth watching the full show most of the time.

  38. The crazy thing is plenty of them love him but hate the corporations. Kind of like how they love the Duck Dynasty dude but hate company he's shilling for and Warren Buffett. Or hate the undocumented migrant workers but think the guy who is hiring them is a stand-up member of the community because he supports the local high school sports team and drives a nice, new truck. The dissonance is impressive.

  43.  @Jnss016  A lot of libraries pay the fees so that their patrons will be able to access those scientific studies and other publications locked behind a paywall. Public libraries are one of the best things about living in a free and open society.

  45. @Ollie B We all get adverts in our mailboxes from companies trying to buy ours all the time. If it's an older home sometimes the park will buy the owner out just to get rid of the old unit and move in a new(er) one. Mine is almost fifty years old - it'll be demolished on-site when I go.

I remember an episode of the original Hawaii Five-0 show back in the 60's and 70's where Steve McGarrett (played by Jack Lord) and his team had chased down the bad guy and Steve shouted for him to surrender. But the bad guy wasn't going easy, so as he turned towards McGarrett what seemed like the entire Hawaii police force opened up on him and unleashed a barrage of gunfire that killed the guy. After which, Steve made some kind of pithy comment to Danno about the shooting and the show ended, cutting to that great theme music and the closing credits. Now that was some must see TV!

  49. In Peggy's defense - those wren't all pictures of Mango, just flamingos in general. If I went to the house of someone I didn't know and they had 158 pictures of people they admired I wouldn't be concerned by that unless the person had photoshopped themselves into the pictures or the pictures were displayed on some kind of alter or the people in the pictures had their eyes scratched out or something weird like that.
