And doing something about it most weeks. But I've always watched the Law and Order series and other cop shows like NYPD Blue (but I had to stop with the Chicago show - it was too much) knowing they, like any action movie, are entertaining escapism. That Ice-T and Richard Belzer are/were on SVU only made that particular show that much more entertaining for me. Ice-T who performed the song "Cop Killer" with his band Body Count - the absurdity is most entertaining.

Why wouldn't you want to watch the full half hour of a show if it's funny and you love the host? I get it with something like SNL where there is a big cast with a different host every week and each segment can be so hit or miss and only Weekend Update seems like it's constantly worth watching. But Trust me dude - you're missing out. Last Week Tonight is worth the watch in full most of the time. The "and now..." transition bits are usually very funny. And the whole episode is always posted on YouTube that first night by others so you don't even have to get an HBO membership to watch. I don't know about that short-attention-span thing I've heard people talk about over the years either. From my perspective it depends on the subject and situation (and the person of course). People are listening to three hour long podcasts and bingeing multiple hours worth of a Netflix series. So unless they have a condition that disrupts their ability to stay focused, if it's something someone is interested in and we aren't being distracted then it seems like our attention span is engaged for the duration. It's why Tik-Tok is so insidious.

"(if it was not always)" - same as it's ever been. Sadly most humans throughout history were always very good at othering people, places, and things in order to normalize and preemptively justify their mistreatment.

That's another constant negatively stereotyped narrative on L&O and other police series. There's a whole thing (like all defense attorneys being scumbags) about Internal Affairs or any kind of civilian oversight being the enemy of good cops just trying to do their job in a dirty world or some similar BS.
