The driver can be too, but if someone is going to be armed and ready to react to a passenger attacking another, or to react to someone having some kind of episode that requires medical help or some other non-violent intervention, that person should be someone "riding shotgun" who can devote their full attention to what's happening. I'd prefer the driver focus on driving the bus. I also think a hardened "cockpit" for the driver around their seat wouldn't be a difficult thing to engineer into the average city bus.

@MA-yl1er Depends on the city and the people. In some places there effectively is a war waging around them and for all kinds of different reasons and excuses those people do have to just deal with it. As for what people believe I'd reckon most folks, regardless of whether they're city people or country people, know that things are different in one place from another. People from the cities move out to the country and people from the country move into cities all the time. Sometimes someone just wants a change of scenery and a fresh start, but usually it's people who aren't okay with the culture or politics or crime where they live or there's a school to attend or job opportunity. If a sweeping generalization can be made that's even close to accurate about this it's that except for the people who are too poor to change their lives, most Americans do so in fairly dramatic ways at least once or twice during their lifetimes.
