  1. Most Republicans probably don't Ike to hear it but Reagan is very much responsible for the eventual rise of Trump. Regarding the Amnesty legislation, I expect the political math was that the people provided amnesty to would be grateful to the Republicans and be like the Cuban refugees in Florida, winning them millions of new voters. And ending the Cold War and opening Russia up to the West would be Reagan cementing his legacy as the president who won the Cold War. Reagan also did a lot of really terrible things like breaking the unions, ignoring the HIV/AIDS crisis and turning it into an epidemic, closing down mental hospitals and putting many of those patients out on the street, ramping up the War on Drugs along with the CIA flooding American inner cities with crack cocaine and the Ollie North Iran/Contra scandal, abolishing the Fairness Doctrine, and the list goes on and on.
