It's a silly metric for all kinds of reasons. One of the most important being that it depends on what the issue is - economics, personal freedom, foreign policy, religion, military policy, and various domestic subjects all are going to evoke different percentages of how people identify as one of those terms. I also will always have my doubts with studies that extrapolate to the whole group when only a fraction of the whole group has been polled.

@christinarose3002 Moderates are establishment centrists from both the political left and the political right. Liberals can be establishment centrist moderates or be part of the political left depending on the political cause and candidate. Progressives tend to be exclusively on the political left. Both Liberals and Progressives usually vote for Democrats as they are pragmatic enough to recognize that Democrats are usually their only real choice to beat the Republican candidate or defeat conservative ideas and policies.

What you are saying isn't entirely incorrect but it largely depended on (and still does) where you were and which communities you belonged to. Being a conservative was ever only seen as being the best of the best among conservatives just as using those terms about liberals was generally only done by conservatives and, to a lesser degree, moderates when they were frustrated with liberals. Though the moderates would also invoke the litany of pejoratives and vulgarities for conservatives used by liberals when they were frustrated with conservatives. Not much has really changed except that the intensity has ramped back up again.

@leechap3 I don't know how you'd quantify something like that so I'm not sure how true it is. Also, most people aren't the same their entire lives and the way they identify politically changes over time. Likewise, I suspect most people who identify as liberal would think of themselves as being as respectable as most any conservative. Maybe even more as conservatives all too often talk a good game but fall short of their values.
