  1. The Republican party has the same problem the Democratic party has and that's the centrists versus the extremists of the party. The difference is the Democratic extremists generally are trying to expand on the Democratic principals of inclusivity, access and fairness where the Republican extremists are trying to drag the rest of the party into the ditch of Just Say No authoritarianism, jingoistic isolationism, and paranoid conspiracies. The Democratic establishment can have a much easier go of finding balance with their radicals but the Republicans are in an all or nothing, roiling death match with those who will not go quietly into that good night because they are the party of Stand and Fight! and other such hyperbolic NRA bumper-sticker nonsense. I don't know which group will win, but Republicans need to figure out if they want to be part of the future with the rest of us or join with those extremists in their party who would prefer to do something extreme to anyone who doesn't look like and agree with them. But just know that while they think the rest of us on the Left and in the Center are weak, we aren't. And while we prefer to use our words like civilized people, we'll be nice -- until it's time to NOT be nice.
