  7. I'd make one change at the end of your post -- to pit poor people against each other. I know poor white people usually are treated better in general than poor people from any other minority group, but I'll almost always have more practical things in common with any other person, regardless of ethnicity, from my socioeconomic level than with someone from the upper classes. But it's in the interest of the upper class to keep driving the left/right narrative and keep us in the underclasses distracted and fighting each other. Remember, the Forbes 400 richest people in the US are now worth three trillion two hundred billion(+) dollars. I don't know how much longer this show can go on.

  18. Thank you and everyone else. It's good to get another perspective (or several) about the Canadian system. One thing to point out as someone who works in healthcare in the U.S. is that way too many people end up in the Emergency Department because often the wait time to see a doctor at their office can take from several weeks to over a month. Depending on the doctors office, sometimes people can go and wait all day hoping to get squeezed in if there is a cancellation, but for most people I know that isn't a reasonable option unless they aren't working or can get the day off from work. And if I'm not mistaken, under the NHS in the United Kingdom people visiting from out of country can receive treatment under the same pay rules as UK citizens. That may have changed or been modified in recent years though. Thanks again everyone!

  24. Plenty of us from Gen X saw this or something like it coming as have people from prior generations. Various nuclear/environmental holocaust or other kinds of dystopian stories have been popular narratives, even entire genres, of books, music, television and film throughout the period that Gen X falls under. Plus I learned from history books in school as well as from news programs and documentaries our parents watched and sometimes made us watch, that our species has always done awful things to one another and the planet in real life. Not to mention my interactions with other people - there some really awful ones out there. As a Gen Xer I grew up expecting that we weren't going to make it past the year 2000 without everything blowing up one way or another, if not sooner. I'm honestly impressed the world isn't an irradiated, mostly lifeless snowball. And since the Sixth Mass Extinction is a slow-moving holocaust the Oligarchy can keep the show going for at least a while longer.

  26. "Hindsight is 20/20" - If that was true and people were applying hindsight then more people would acknowledge that recent political history seems to be repeating itself. I see a lot of people whose votes the Dems need who are not in love with the ticket and while the bottom of the ticket is making promises, the top of the ticket has made it pretty clear those aren't his priorities. Besides - it's still September. We haven't even gotten to the October Surprise yet.

My store has plexi-shields at the registers and the cashier was wearing a mask and gloves, but I saw some other staff using only one or the other as well as a few not wearing either - just like the rest of the people shopping. It seemed like more of a matter of personal choice as to how much protection they wanted to be using. But I'll agree that corporate America doesn't GAF about it's staff in ways that really matter. It's part of why they are always happy to get rid of unions or keep any kind of employee organizing out of the workplace in the first place. It's also a shame the way US unions have gotten their own bad reputation over the years. Now more than ever is the time to start organizing to initiate the changes we need to make happen when we return to a post-pandemic world and can effect change through group demonstration, action, and labor strikes if needed. I hope we don't let this pass too and just go back to being a consumer credit driven corporate-ruled culture rolling steadily towards the next crisis.
