  1. Unfortunately the laws often don't get applied to the people at the top of any of our institutions of power. They should, but usually the worst punishment they suffer is an early retirement with full pension and benefits for life. There are a lot of similarities to that famous Fitzgerald bit about how the rich are different from the rest of us that largely holds true for those running our institutions of power too. There have to be more, but I can only think of two major(ish) politicians during my lifetime that actually went to prison - Blagojevich and Traficant.

  2. If I revere anything it's the institutions of the US and the potential they represent. The people in the institutions are often emotionally broken with any of a variety of diagnosable DSM-5 disorders.
