There are regulations against doing that and since Jack Smith isn't a MAGA Republican he's the kind of person that obeys the regulations of his job.

@rhondah1587 And the original post was about releasing the information, not continuing the investigation.

@rhondah1587 Learn to read. The comment and my reply are about releasing the information, not whether they can continue the investigation. There are FOIA and Privacy Act rules about releasing information, not just policy. Duh.

@Dr-Mantis-Tobogan From what I've read, the release of info from the investigation is regulated by FOIA and the Privacy Act. Jack Smith can create a final report of the investigation and submit that to his boss, the Attorney General, who makes the decision about whether the report gets released or not. But as the AG is Garland I doubt it would be released.

@rhondah1587 Do you have some reference for that? I know there is a DOJ policy that sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted by the department which is why Smith is wrapping up his investigation. But I've heard that Jack Smith releasing that information would violate federal laws, including the Privacy Act, that he could then face charges for violating. And also that by winding down his investigation now before he's fired by Trump, Smith can submit a final report about the investigation that it would then be up to AG Garland to disclose or not. So it probably wouldn't be as that would be par for course for Garland. But it could also be used by a future AG if anyone ever wants to pursue charges against Trump after he's out of office again.

@rhondah1587 Fucking YouTube deleted my first reply so let me try this again. I know the ending the investigation is based a policy about investigating a sitting president. But there are laws in FOIA and the Privacy Act that regulate and prohibit releasing the details of the investigation.

@AfroThunder915 More than very common, it's standard procedure for the investigator to file a final report about the investigation to the Attorney General. And then it's the AG who determines what, if anything, of the report will be made public. What isn't supposed to happen is that the report is released to the press or the general public by the investigator.
