The lead story about the clothes reminds me of when the classified documents problem with Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Mike Pence (except that clearly the gift of clothes is much less consequential than retaining classified documents). When it was discovered that Biden and Pence had kept documents they shouldn't have along with the rest of the documents from their times in office the documents were returned and mea culpas were offered by both men. But Trump doubled down about how he hadn't done anything wrong, the documents belonged to him, and he proceeded to move additional documents around trying to hide them from the officials tasked with returning the documents to the secure national archives. Much like Joe Biden and Mike Pence, I suspect the Starmers didn't even think about this until after it happened and now they are embarrassed and are trying to make it right. And much like Donald Trump, I suspect Boris and other conservative Tories would still argue they didn't even do anything wrong.

  24. The problem with that is even in a WFH situation you often still have to work a regular schedule of set hours. Like Judy at 19:30 tells James, many people with a disability have better and worse days which is going to make working a fixed schedule impossible without the employer and co-workers being very accommodating about when or if the person works. Most jobs don't offer that degree of flexibility.

Likewise, if you think it's okay to use even light physical violence against a child, especially a small child, then again, we're at an impasse. And since you brought it up, I think it's also a bad idea, possibly even more damaging, to tell a child they are useless or incompetent or to use other verbal and emotional abuse to discipline them. I don't think everyone assumes that will happen but rather hopes that a combined force of NATO troops being in Ukraine will help convince Putin to stop the invasion, withdraw his military, and deal with Ukraine politically instead of militarily. It could all go very badly, but what's happening now isn't going very well for Ukraine either. And Putin might not have a choice but to accept a peace deal unless he wants to go to war with NATO which he probably does not.

I suspect some of the backlash is from parents who remember those terrible teachers when they were students and didn't get support from their parents. Parents need to try and take into account if there is just one teacher saying the child is a problem or are their multiple teachers and other adults at the school all saying the same thing. But there is also probably some of the wanting to be their child's friend so they defend their kid before accepting that the teacher might be seeing something the parents don't. And there are probably some parents who see the criticism of their children as an attack on themselves and their parenting abilities.

In my case I wasn't smacked often or too severely because I was a fairly obedient child who also didn't want to get smacked. But the experiences also left a lasting resentment and lack of respect for those who used physical discipline to try and correct my behavior. And I'm not saying physical discipline doesn't work in the short run, just that's it's a pathetic thing to do to another person and especially to a child and that from personal experience it can have negative consequences for the child later on. As for my issues as you put it, I have spent time over the years trying to address and overcome the attitudes and behavior that causes me problems. Part of doing that work is recognizing the root causes of where they come from. Some of the things that I struggle with go back to those events.

Even if Ukraine doesn't drive the Russian attackers out or should fall completely, much of the rest of the West is more unified against Putin's Russia than in the past forty years. Russia has lost a generation of young men to the war and by having fled the country and is more of a failed state than ever. And NATO has new members and many of the countries in NATO are increasing their military spending and force readiness.

  527. Not taking things that impact the larger society or even the entire world seriously until it's too late is simply what people do. It has to do number of factors from simple denial to feeling overwhelmed by the problems to various reasons for maintaining the status quo and other things in between and aside from these three. We've done it in the macro level with political figures and movements, natural and man-made plagues, and right down to individual examples most all of us can point to in our own personal lives. As for why, it's not like there's one answer to that either. It's complacency, fear, greed, obstinacy, ignorance, lack of resources or will power, and on and on.

Some born into a lower class may advance into a middle or even an upper class lifestyle for a while but they tend to return back to the lower class from which they started. Likewise, someone raised middle or upper class that falls on hard times will more easily be able to return to the economic status they were part of when they were growing up. There are a lot of reasons for this that would only make this reply even longer than it already is. Maybe there isn't as much overt discussion specifically about class struggle and class warfare the US among the wider population because, as the saying goes, the class war in America is over and the rich won. But the issues of class and the inequity of class disparities that exist here like they do most everywhere are very much a part of people thoughts and concerns even if they phrase the subject using different language or view it from other perspectives. It's not uncommon for people in the US to be aware of the fact that they have more in common with other people, regardless of their ethnicity, that are in their same economic status or class than they do with people from a higher or lower class. It's a fact about which people who are less racially bigoted are especially aware. As for education, I don't know about other countries as I've only lived full-time in the US, but it's been my experience that education is just another part of the same thing I was originally writing about. The quality and scope of a persons scholastic and extra-curricular education depends on several factors including the parents political views and how engaged they are in their child's education, the individual teachers a student has especially during high school history, social studies, government, or civics classes and when/if they attend college, and any mentors or other non-curricular influences a person has either directly in-person or through the music they listen too, books they read, or other sources they encounter, again, especially during their high school and college years. It also matters if the person being educated is engaged in their education and with the people educating them. As I wrote in my previous post, class consciousness and the issues of class very much depends on the groups of people in which someone is a member and by which they are influenced. Sorry - this got kind of long.

But Biden and Harris never treated President Zelenskyy the way Trump and Vance did at the end of February in the Oval Office. And the Biden administration never suspended intel reports to Ukraine. And they fought against the delays due to opposition from Donald Trump and congressional Republicans when they tried to stop the arms shipments in 2024. And Biden didn't shake down the Ukrainians for their rare earth minerals in exchange for our help. So yeah, while it could have been better, Biden was doing a much better job with the Ukrainian/Russian conflict than Trump has done.

Of course, the Palestinians need to do their part too which includes stopping the attacks on Israelis, releasing hostages, changing their charter that calls for the destruction of Israel and driving the Israeli's into the sea, and disbanding Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups. Unfortunately I suspect none of this will happen by either side and so the cycle of violence and bloodshed will continue.
