Hospital staff might not always practice it, but at our facility we are taught that when you work with sick people in healthcare you are supposed to put your own biases aside to provide the best treatment for the patient. There are any number of race or gender based situations in which the hospital staff need to adjust their performance to meet the needs of that patient. Sometimes that means not being involved in the patient's course of care and leaving them to the treatment of staff that won't cause the patients cultural or personal beliefs to be offended. It's not always possible, but when it is it shouldn't be big deal.
