  2. As it's always been. Humans typically build up, live in for a time, and eventually flee from and abandon cities and we have for for thousands of years. Our societies grow from tribes into kingdoms and empires run by and for the few and their enablers often at the expense of pretty much everyone else. But those empires always collapse into ruin and the cycle starts over again with a new bunch of tribes. The difference is whether we, or more likely they, can avoid being part of the mass extinction that is happening and become the leaders of the new tribes who will build the next societies and whether they will build empires again or finally create something more truly egalitarian - if "we" survive at all.
