Rabbi Goldschmidt did himself no favors during this interview. When you get those hard and embarrassing questions like Mr Sebastian asked at the start you have to own those mistakes. Don't give a non-answer, dance around and deflect, do a bit of whataboutism and then get defensive. There's got to be a good yiddish word for that.

The rabbi embarrassed himself and he should be embarrassed. But it was unfortunate how rabbi Goldschmidt couldn't simply say "yes - I was wrong to stay silent and I regret it". I can understand his silence at the time for any number of reasons. But later on after someone fails to speak out against something that is wrong, especially when they are no longer in harm's way, they should be able to admit the failure and take responsibility for the ramifications (good and bad) of their silence.

@M.Đ-z4u Internet trolls are something wrong with the world. There are worse things but that seemed like a relevant place to start. Let's see if I'm right.

@juergenernst1320 I wasn't writing about what he did while he was in Russia. I can understand his silence at the time for any number of reasons. But later on after someone fails to speak out against something that is wrong, especially when they are no longer in harm's way, they should be able to admit the failure and take responsibility for the ramifications of their silence.

@M.Đ-z4u The list is long - where should I start?

@levthelion Since when does someone have to represent anyone or anything to provide an opinion about something? That's not how conversations, and certainly not YouTube or other social media comments, work. Nobody has to be part of any marginalized or abused community to know that with few exceptions staying silent is usually a poor choice even if it's the only one at the time. And most people usually express regret for poor choices even if there was a good reason at the time. It seems fairly obvious rabbi Goldschmidt regretted not speaking out or he would have continued to keep his silence and stayed in Russia to still be with the community he represented, right? I'm criticizing his inability or unwillingness to make that kind of acknowledgement when asked after the fact on this program.

@levthelion Never been accused of verbal acrobatics before - cool! And you're twisting yourself up defending him and trying to prove me wrong about something that is just one irrelevant persons meaningless opinion (speaking about myself here just to be clear). I wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquisition over such a banal comment.
