  1. Putin invaded Crimea and the West largely did nothing so the argument that NATO was encroaching kinds of seems like a rubber/glue situation. But then fully invading Ukraine and using the same excuse, along with the nonsense about Nazis and Satanic forces running the country, was too bold and provocative a move to not get a response.
