That cop trying to rationalize the problem away like that and no one calling him out only shows the problem with law enforcement. I've heard them and their supporters use the line "we run into the situations others run away from" over and over again making it very clear they don't think of themselves as being just another profession. But what they don't bring up is how many other professions get to carry guns and have the ability to execute, abuse and victimize members of the general public with near impunity as the word of a police officer usually carries much more weight than that of the rest of us stupid civilians. The Golden State Killer didn't turn out to be a plumber, did he?

@dsmitty1416 Bad analogy, dude. People in many professions get labeled as a racist without any evidence - not just cops. There are people out there that feel if someone works for the government they are racists because the whole system is racist. Teachers get called racist, doctors and nurses get called racist, bus drivers and cab drivers and shop owners get called racist. Most anyone in a position of authority gets labeled a racist at some point or another.

A Berryman I understand what you are saying and as someone who is and has often been alone I absolutely relate. While women are absolutely much more at risk then men, it can happen to anyone. And single elderly women and men might even be more vulnerable as they have even less of an ability to defend themselves or escape from physical violence. Anyone who is alone is vulnerable. But counting on someone else who has to be notified of an assault and then drive to and locate where it is happening to be the person that is going to protect you is a terrible idea. You also have the legal right to protect yourself by any means necessary when being violently attacked and luckily we live in a country where we have the right to own weapons that will stop an attacker. Even having roommates or being in a relationship isn't going to protect you from someone who is set on hurting you as we know from the Zodiac Killer, Son of Sam Killer, and the Golden State Killer just to name three high profile cases. And in that last instance the attacker was one of those people who you are hoping will be there to protect you from the bad guys. There are things you can do besides having an SO or roommates - extra locks and a home security system, a big dog, self-defense and firearm training (I recommend a shotgun for home defense). But even with all of these you might still be brutalized by someone. And absolutely don't get a gun if you don't think you'll be able to kill your attacker without hesitation or have children around. Too many people - women and men - even police are killed every year with a firearm that's been taken from them. Hoping an armed police officer will be there to stop an attacker might make you feel better, but it's just a placebo. You are better off relying on yourself and maintaining a strong sense of situational awareness, doing your best to avoid dangerous people and places, and providing for your own security at home or when you are out. This probably didn't help and I apologize for that. Stay strong, stay safe and be well.
