  1. As someone who has been and always shall be struggling with depression, he's absolutely right. It is best to live a fully engaged life of meaning and to do so generally you need the elements he describes in some combination and some degree. But more than a lot of work, it's an unending daily struggle to live really engaged that's got it's good days and it's bad days. And even if you are able to do the work and really lock in those good days, you're always going to be faking it at least a little because you've been broken. After you mend the cracks the scars remain reminding us of what happened, even if we're the only ones who can see them. You don't stop being a person who suffers from depression any more than you stop being person who suffers from addiction who isn't using at the moment. We have to be honest that we are always one trigger away from falling right back into the old traps and will probably do so at some point. Try to learn, forgive as needed, and move forward - one foot in front of the other and hopefully hand in hand with a good friend.
