Thank you! I was wondering if it was just me.

@jnolasco2585 It sounds like Curtis is in a special situation. Most urban areas do require you to be tied into the grid to have the home be considered habitable. I think if someone tries to live too long with the power off they'll get a notice from the city or someone. But that doesn't mean you have to use their power. If you could be conservative enough you could get by with a small solar system and pay the monthly charge for just having the service - which hopefully would not be more than 20 or 25 dollars. It's part of a low-impact urban homesteading philosophy. Live within the rules but minimize your dependence on the state and the corporations through self-sufficiency wherever and however you can. And Good on ya, Curtis Battig! Way to get creative and hang in there. Stay strong, brother!

Every home, apartment, store, and other building should have it own combination of solar and small-scale wind generation and storage to take care of on-site necessities like refrigeration, heating and cooling, and provide for a few simple things like lights and charging devices. At the neighborhood level is a centralized generation that provides the additional power load to both the neighborhood for a nominal fee to run those less vital hardware like entertainment electronics and to hospitals and other vital powered infrastructure. It's not the whole answer but it could be part of the solution.
