FEC, there is no longer an aggregate limit on how much an individual can give in total to all candidates, PACs and party committees combined. So one wealthy person/corporation can have a much larger influence on the political process than the vast majority of the electorate. And then there is the whole ALEC thing - not being done by folks sending ten bucks to Bernie or the Trump 2020 crowd.

There are all kinds of division that exist, but I think it comes back to our habitual simplification of things to an either/or binary solution when life is almost always much more grey - sometimes blue or another hue. Most people are deeply invested in the Status Quo of their side being the correct side. Or they don't agree with all of whatever dogma they've previously been indoctrinated with and don't have any way to extract themselves so they just give in and let it go in order to salvage some kind of a life. The divide is between those who make their own music and those who chant the tribal mantra - whichever tribe that may be. Blimey, this redistribution of wealth is trickier than I thought. How can anyone not be exposed to the constant negativity and hypocrisies in our news and entertainment and not be surprised when people give up? Those that didn't vote gave up their voice on that day for a lot of reasons. But a big one was that none of the candidates were worth a shit. The two primary candidates had so much baggage and the other two were irrelevant. But the Trumpublicans have also surrendered in their almost messianic adoration for this President. The truly frightening part is that they are okay with him suspending future elections if he thinks they need to. And old Bankrupt was just going off about how the sick system is rigged but he's going to fix it. Trust him! All said while actively backing Roy "get 'em young and pure" Moore. Outrage fatigue eventually sets in and we take one step closer to the end.

  20. Old Bankrupt Donny ran as an anti-establishment populist outsider but on the conservative nationalist side as opposed to the liberal progressive Bernie side. But he was always part of the establishment contributing to the candidates of both parties to make sure his needs and agenda was being taken care of. Once he was in office he became exactly what the RNC needed him to be. Hillary would have been the same and Biden will be as well (why Bernie won't be his VP). DNC/RNC are just the two sides of the same establishment coin with a few social differences around the ideological fringe. The core mission of the military industrial complex and financial system dominance that run our system of governance remain the same.

I've found a profession that will let me work remotely so that's my way out of the city as long as I can find somewhere with a reliable high speed connection. As for the rest, I know there are other like minded liberals already out there so hopefully we'll be able to find each other at a book club or farmers market and help keep the madness at bay until more of you can join us. The funny part is that if we just leave the politics alone, lend a hand to your neighbors and give folks a wave as you pass each other on the road in and out of town - maybe even share some of your harvest from the garden or drop off a six-pack of home brew, they start to think of you as "one of the good ones" and you can slip in under the radar. Then work on breaking the indoctrination of the kids in the area and change those hearts and minds where it counts. Day by day - one mind at a time. I hope someday you can join us.

I was born in '68 so one of the earliest of the Gen X cadre. I hate labels - boomer is just the newest of a bad bunch and doesn't tell me much about the person.   26. There are a lot of factors that caused this last election to turn out the way it did and plenty of blame to go around. I still would have liked to see Hillary and Bernie run together with Hillary in the Presidential role and Bernie as VP. Hillary having been a First Lady, Secretary of State and a Clinton in general has a long history on the International stage so she could have focused on that role that and Bernie could have spearheaded the domestic causes that he and his supporters back with the same passion they showed during the election and the authority of the Executive Branch. But the Democrats are nothing if not masters of shooting themselves in their own collective foot.

Maybe 30% believe the lies fully and another 30% (or even a bit more) are still buying in to the establishment narrative to one degree or another to maintain their lifestyles and keep buying the toys. Pura Vida dew - there aren't many elected officials on either side or at any level of government that aren't putting the needs and desires of their own inner circle, their large bundled donors and the party dictated positions ahead of what would be best for the people in their districts. That isn't really anything new, we're just seeing the fallout from when their hypocrisy and assaults on basic dignities are exposed more clearly because of the hyper-aware media environment we live in and the shrinking period between action and reaction - and re-reaction.

A UBI (or guaranteed income) won't go as far in a big city economy, but it could allow people to relocate to smaller towns and depressed rural areas where the cost of living is much less and be able to bring wealth and diversity back into those communities. This would be even more possible if several people wanted to join together to then start a small business or form a small farming co-op. I'm going to keep pushing the idea of repopulating the largely abandoned parts of the country until Mr Reich and the rest of y'all get on board my idea of a Relocation Revolution!   33. I'll say this for Donald Trump - he's completely true to himself. But part of the problem, maybe even all of it, is that's the only thing he is true to. It's why he'll never be part of the Oligarchy And the reason we know he's just another wealthy con man and not part of the Oligarchy is the very fact that he is President. None of the people who own and run the country are going to do something as base and open to public scrutiny as hold elected office or serve somewhere in it's hierarchy. Maybe if they were bored or decided to try and undermine some part of the government that tries to serve the public good they'd take some role in the cabinet of a tool like Donny. Hell, they wouldn't even let him have a major sports franchise. Think of it, they won't trust him with a football team but the highest office in the land is up for grabs. I think we have to be getting awfully close to the day they all withdraw into their bunkers to ride out the changes that are coming..

  38. Trump is an interesting glitch that's happened to the established system. I heard someone basically compare him to a malicious piece of Malware or a virus that Putin has uploaded to the American OS. It gave me a chuckle. That being said, while there is a generalized stereotype of the average Conservative/Republican voter that's mostly accurate due to belief in key issues they are devoted to absolutely, they also hold a variety of opinions on subjects which can be very surprising. Same is true of the average Liberal/Democrat voter. And when you get to the fringes of both sides, their rhetoric and actions tend to become similarly more extreme. The problem is that much of the ideological conflict the two sides engage in is just bullshit and foolishness being used to divide and isolate us from each other. I remember this joke from Fabrice Fabrice - "You know who likes fried chicken? Black people - You know who else likes fried chicken - EVERYBODY!" When we get past the what God you pray to and what we can do to our own bodies or the body of another consenting adult, every person trying to survive on anything less than thirty or forty thousand dollars a year (or even more in a lot of U.S. cities) is going to have vastly more in common with another person in the same lower income range than anyone making even a low six-figure income let alone the Upper 9.99%. The Oligarchy isn't even at the same damn party and they are the ones who are supposed to really be running this shit show. Which brings me back to my original point about Trump. Part of the reason I'm convinced the Russians and/or Assange meddled and may have even swung the election to Trump is that I have a hard time believing the people who depend on us staying bought in to our two-party, representative democracy narrative would want Bankrupt Donny and the Trump train wreck pissing all over their party and throwing shit against the walls to see what sticks. But maybe Trump is just being used to help release the pressure that was built up during Obama's turn so it all doesn't blow up until the appointed hour. To every season, ya'll.

They might be able to admit that answer is usually gray and can be found between the archetypes or extremes of the two sides, but they have a hard time incorporating that into their daily lives and conversations. The thought that there is another paradigm at work where the world isn't as they see it, INCONCEIVABLE! It's one of the ways the Oligarchy maintains order and control.

But that isn't going to happen is it? Mark my words - we're going to get Biden/Buttigieg and Trump just might beat that combo. What I really think is that the Spectacle has captivated the masses and the few of us who see the cliff coming are along for the ride. We are going to stay distracted by foolishness and divided by fear as the Sixth Mass Extinction progresses rapidly over the next decade or two and we'll see the Oligarch's retreat not only into their compounds but eventually withdraw completely into a variety of subterranean complexes with only their most loyal security and support staff. The rest of us will be left behind to fend for ourselves in a world collapsing on multiple fronts. But I still hope, fool that I am, that we'll thread this needle and make the changes we have to make as a species in order to survive a variety of quickly approaching environmental and cultural tipping points and not too much more damage to the rest of the planet along the way.
