Comments by "Orwellian Horseman of the Apocalypse" (@DennisMoore664) on "Caller: Why Won't the Left Accept Veterans?" video.
Most of the Veterans I've known and met are pretty Conservative so they generally don't feel comfortable around liberal Democrats - especially the more extreme wing of the party that does express an intolerance for "the War Machine", of which veterans are an intrinsic part, or denigrate military service in one way or another. It's easy to say the right thing the wrong way or just say the wrong thing all together. The thing is, these are also the same people would have been conservative and identified with the Republican party regardless of their profession. Consequently there is less chance for most Democrats, especially the more hard-left, to get to interact with vets. Stupid binary ideologies! Left/Right - Liberal/Conservative. What is it going to take to make people understand that we have more than one choice or the other?

haus_ gattaca While I can not, at this moment in his forum provide you you with a specific example of someone who identified as a person from the Left, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Rex Sands post above is a good example. "...you tell me you support the troops? They are a part of the problem but you guys are to brainwashed to see it". Maybe he's just some Russian bot or a Proud Boy trolling the boards but his post sounded a lot like a number of folks who lean liberal that I've known over the years. As for McCain, I have known people on the left who called McCain a war criminal dropping bombs on civilians in North Vietnam who deserved whatever he got at the Hanoi Hilton. One last first-person point of reference. I was in NJROTC during high school - wanted to join the Navy but it turns out my vision is below the threshold for voluntary service. But during those three years I was in ROTC we wore our uniform to school one day a week and I was regularly verbally harassed and denigrated by other students and even the occasional instructor from other classes. The question "why do you want to kill people?" was thrown at me with some frequency. Not as specific as being called a baby killer but not all that friendly or respectful either.

@kevchard5214 Agreed - the whole "destroy the person to build a soldier" is understandable if you are trying to train people to be able to kill on command, but it's a horrible way to emotionally and morally maim someone.

@xjarheadjohnson Many? I'm sure there are some - maybe more than a few, but not many. Not unless there is a generational divide between the Vietnam era vets and those serving in today's warzones which is absolutely possible. I really hope what you say is true but over the years I've met and known more than a few few soldiers from the Marines and Army who served in Vietnam and save for one they all learned pretty hard to the Right. Mostly great guys, one and all, but not the most liberal bunch.

haus_ gattaca To the contrary - but what did I say that makes you think this?

@xjarheadjohnson I hope that's true of the rest of the troops too, and maybe it's a divide between older Vietnam and Gulf War I era veterans I've known when I was younger and worked with at the VA and the new generation of Iraq/Afghanistan vets, but every poll of service members I've ever read and the majority of the soldiers I've listened to support conservative and Republican candidates. Maybe those younger soldiers like yourself who identify with the Left are also more apolitical (or at least less likely to cast a vote) whereas the more conservative, even if there are fewer in total, are much more vocal and active about their politics?
