The conversation at around 43:00 about having someone in the audience helping make the audience enjoy your set was something that made Joe's career as a stand up. He's talked more than once about when he was starting at the Comedy Store and the established comedian (can't remember the guys name) that sat down with Mitzi Shore and laughed it up during his set which convinced Mitzi to make Joe a paid regular is kind of an example of what Dubner is suggesting.

Marriage is the legally acknowledged bond between two (usually) people (also usually) that confirms various cultural and codified rights, responsibilities and status upon the individuals who are being bound together. I would hope that for anyone outside of the whole "arranged marriage" tradition, people would get married because they are in love with each other and want to spend their lives together. Children might be birthed or adopted into the marriage but they don't have to be to still have a happy, productive and successful marriage If anything, a lot of people used to and probably still do get married is because the guy got his girlfriend pregnant. And I wouldn't be surprised if a large number of the people who get divorced are couples like that who got married because they or their parents decided they would try to raise the kid.

All communities have variation of how they feel about themselves and the way they re looked at from outside their community.   122. 1:27:00 - if the energy was dispersed broadly into the environment we would have a mechanism in all of in the devices that used that source of energy to collect and concentrate the energy into a useable stream. It would probably require some kind of short-term energy storage medium to help stabilize and regulate it to a useable level. Although the concern I've heard raised and makes sense is about how raising the background EM level to disperse the energy we'd all be accessing would interfere with our ability to use radio's. No more free sound through the air. But they might have found a way to compensate for that or use the increased EM field as its own carrier wave? I don't know it's not like I'm an Astrophysicist or something. And I forget where it was but they talked about having battery change-out stations as opposed to charging stations and Neil shit on that too. But as batteries get smaller they could be designed to plug in and out in the same way that the battery on a cordless power tool does. The companies will need to adopt a universal design for the batteries, but it would be very easy to build a charging station that also stored a number of charged batteries. You would synch your vehicle to the station and it would automatically maneuver your vehicle into place, robotically (or by a person if your in Oregon) switch out the depleted battery for a charged one, run a system check to make sure everything is working correctly, perform any hardware updates, and even give the car a wash while you're waiting. If something like this was at every rest stop and truck stop along the Interstate system we could easily use electric cars to get most anywhere you needed. It would be really easy to have something like this in Hawaii.

Having all that water trapped in glaciers would have lowered sea levels making available a number of islands along the way that aren't above sea level now that the waters have risen back up to inter-glacial levels. For the last 120,000 years sea level have been between at least 40 and 80 meters lower than they are now. During the most recent glacial period called the Wisconsinin period between 15,000(ish) and 60,000 years ago the sea levels ranged from 80 to almost 140 meters lower. And if there was a catastrophic warming event around 12,600 years ago that caused some kind of rapid or possibly only hours-long release of the 2-mile deep continental ice sheets. that much melt water rushing back into the oceans would have scoured off any settlement or structures in it's path. Any islands would probably have been hit by mile-high tsunamis and been wiped even cleaner than the continental shelf as it was submerged bellow rapidly rising sea levels. Something like this is probably responsible at least in part for the legends of Atlantis.

So I hid away that part of myself, toughened up and focused on developing and expressing only the masculine parts of my personality. But those feminine elements are still there and now that I'm older and don't give as much of a fuck I just don't worry about it. It's not to the point where I'd ever identify as female even for a while or as transgender, but I do like the term non-binary because life and love and being who we are usually doesn't come down to a choice that clear-cut. There are a hell of a lot more than fifty shades of grey to how we get through this life.

If the US would treat addiction and abuse like the healthcare problems they are and recognize drugs are mostly a criminal problem because they are illegal we could actually start solving this problem. Legalize all drugs AND provide either this kind of treatment center or a safe environment for the addict. It's the second part they did do in Portugal where legalization seems to mostly be a success, and that they did not do in Portland where things are mostly not. There also need to be places where an addict can use a small, simply furnished room where they can be supplied with the safely produced drug(s) of choice, food and water, and maybe a device to watch videos and listen to music. This both gets them away from other people trying to get things done and puts them in a safe place where they wont be victimized while they are out of it and can receive first-aid if they have a bad reaction.
