The thought that a woman could be imprisoned for something that happens naturally to a large percentage of women is insane. The fact that it already happens makes me sick. I'm surprised I hadn't heard about this before on Democracy Now (maybe I missed it) but an example is when an "Oklahoma jury convicted a Native American woman of manslaughter for miscarrying a pregnancy after 15-17 gestational weeks. She's one of 57 such cases documented in the state since 2006 — and 1,200 in the United States." The National Advocates of Pregnant Women (NAPW), a pro-choice advocacy group, has recorded 1,600 such cases between 1973 and 2020, with about 1,200 occurring in the last 15 years alone.

The cop who maced the soldier and threatening him about "riding the lightning" and how he should be afraid needs to be on a permanent no-hire list for any kind of law enforcement or private security jobs and be prohibited from owning a firearm. The best way to do that would be to secure a plea to felonious assault with a sentence to be served in protective custody in a facility where he won't be killed by other inmates. I've read enough about life in the pre-colonized Americas to know it was generally less communal paradise and much more of a violent and harsh way of life with numerous examples of very deadly, even genocidal at times, warfare and slavery practiced between tribes. The numerously myriad ways people were creatively tortured and sacrificed to gods by indigenous cultures throughout the western hemisphere are terrifying. Anything resembling human, civil or gender rights completely depended on the individual tribe someone was in and often didn't exist for those outside of the tribe. Capitalism has it's problems but I love indoor plumbing and wouldn't want to give up the local sewage system that cleans up our collective mess. And toilet paper - loves me some toilet paper! And so do most people in the US. The Establishment oligarchs, kleptocrats and plutocrats know most people prefer a comfortable prison of having stuff and needing someplace to keep their stuff to the minimalistic freedom of a nomadic way of life. They control the cultural status quo and the governmental bureaucracies that run everything; and since they have all those people with guns and the authority to use "legitimate" violence, that is not going to change until they want it to change. We can and should occupy wall street or a pipeline construction site when they are doing something wrong. It is always good to fight today for a better tomorrow. But people need to stop trying to reclaim a world that never really existed. It isn't any more realistic than the wingnuts who want to make America great again.

I get that the part at 2:20 where Amy describes the conditions in Mexico as being dangerous and inhumane including torture and kidnapping are used to make an impact about how bad it is for immigrants in Mexico. But we need to remember that all those things happen to vulnerable people in the US too, especially to women and children. People seeking asylum, or not seeking permission at all, are some of the most vulnerable to all kinds of predators in every aspect of their lives here. And that's hoping they aren't actually predators themselves here to continue to prey on their fellow immigrants as they make the easiest targets. The US is certainly statistically better than Mexico but probably not by much for migrants and not at all for the people who are physically, sexually, and financially abused as well as tortured and kidnapped. And if someone is in the country illegally there isn't much recourse or reason to report things that happen to you besides going to church and praying to God and maybe talking to a priest. You can risk going to a clinic or hospital if things are bad enough, but forget the police or other authorities. And it's almost winter again.

  84. I suspect it's a mix of the blockade and the leadership of the country that was responsible for so much of the suffering of the Cuban people, but Communism was not the problem. From this outsiders perspective, having only heard about how Communism is such a dead-end political theory, Communism has worked surprisingly well in Cuba in spite of the blockade. I'm not saying it's a workers paradise, but find a country that doesn't have sociopolitical problems and I'll show you the exception that proves the rule. Perhaps even the blockade and being largely isolated from the West, especially the United States, has kept Cuba free from some of the darker aspects of being an ally and playground/exploitable resource of the U.S. and it's corporations. It would be interesting if China and Cuba signed a treaty to do an end run around this whole mess.

If at some point we can develop brain scanning technology for both the accused and the accuser that would be a start, but we are years or decades away from that - if ever. But retraumatizing someone who is a legitimate victim of something as horrendous as a sexual assault, be that a woman, man or child, should obviously be avoided. These kinds of cases need to be tried in a different process and setting than standard legal proceedings. Perhaps it would help if the examination is done outside of the courtrooms typical adversarial structure with everyone on display and under a more clinical setting where only the judge, witness(es), attorneys and mental health professionals would be involved in the testimony and cross examination. I'm not even sure if the accused should be in the same room as the witness unless they are shielded from line-of-sight contact as this could intimidate someone who is a legitimate victim. I understand the principle of being able to confront your accusers, but maybe sexual assault cases need to be an exception to that principle. At the same time, anyone who uses sex as a tool to advance their career should be ashamed of themselves and be ostracized from that profession as they are as much a part of the problem as the person rewarding them for doing so. It's damned unfortunate how many of us are broken to one degree or another and how hungry some of us are to be famous.

There's also a camaraderie that comes from doing something that not everyone else does. That being said, smoking stinks and it would be fine with me if it became something that someone will have to grow for themself if they want to keep doing it. The only problem I have with this is that by making something as widely used globally as tobacco illegal in New Zealand you're only creating a new product for their local black markets. It makes me nervous when governments outlaw addictive substances instead of treating addiction as a problem addressed by healthcare providers and not police.

And as a private citizen you actually can own a rocket launcher or hand grenades if you comply with the 1934 NFA and 1968 GCA (plus any state or local rules that may apply). This means you have to apply for.permission to register them as a “Destructive Device" with the federal government before you have possession, which is an involved process that requires filling out the paperwork, getting fingerprinted and photographed (actually, you provide the passport type photos), and attaching a $200 check (per device; individual rounds for “Destructive Devices" are frequently - although not always - “Destructive Devices" by themselves and have to also go through the same process per round), and wait up to a year for ATF to respond with an approval if you meet the legal requirements (residency, legal in your state, at least 21 years old in most cases, and a background check doesn't show any disqualifies that would prohibit you from buying a “normal" gun). There are also very specific rules you have to follow when transporting, storing, or allowing other people access to NFA regulated things like Destructive Devices.

And using dispersed, regenerative ranching instead of spreading toxic waste treatment bio-solids on farmland helps rebuild soils and naturally fertilizes fields. All too often humans seem to only have the rights we can afford to purchase or take with violence. And that's just for us men. It's unfortunate that there isn't a better term because there are plenty of people who also mean defund as in take away the money as a way to "starve the beast" and help abolish the way law enforcement is being done. If anything, good law enforcement probably needs an increase in funding that most people don't want to pay higher taxes to make happen. For example, instead of a sigle armed officer in a police cruiser there should also be a trained mental health provider in the car with them to help defuse situations, but that would be an additional forty or fifty thousand dollar base salary plus all the costs of benefits, etc. for each person that we'd have to find funding for and good luck with that. And there are any number of technological solutions that would help reduce the need for police intervention in a variety of situations but the technology all needs additional research money or is still cost-prohibitive at this point. So we're left with yet another complex problem being addressed by an imprecise catch-phrase that probably won't help solve anything.

There are also plenty of people who prefer to live under an established order. Not everyone wants to be in charge so the Owners make sure that willingness to serve is a characteristic in those they bring with them. I agree that if the group stays isolated long enough, especially if the isolation becomes generational, there will be probably a restructuring or collapse of the social order, but it would take a while.

We only get to choose between (really) two candidates that are often vetted and pre-screened for any office beyond the most rural of city council seats (you get my meaning, I suspect) by the Party establishment. Likewise, it is more often the needs of the party line and and a politicians corporate and other business constituents that take precedence over any small or non-donors in their district. Petitions and voting are awesome and we should all do those things and more (peacefully) as active citizens in a participatory government, but we have to be honest that It's mostly a rigged game and we the people usually don't even have a seat at the table let alone be a voice heard over the crowd.

But much like voting for third-party candidates, writing in a candidate is mostly symbolic when the vote is for state and federal offices and effectively meaningless for the presidential election with the electoral college. I am saying we shouldn't kid ourselves about how little that participation actually matters and especially for an individual citizen without substantial resources or the influence of celebrity. Their meaning (at least in the United States) has become something specifically related to and dependant on the lack of institutional power among People of Color in general and particularly institutional representation from people in the Black and Indigenous communities. I'm not as sure what racial prejudice from non-Whites who are part of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community or Latino/Chicano/Hispanic Americans towards other POC is considered, but I don't see how it can be racism since they aren't Caucasians. Until the goal posts get moved again, a White person saying being Black or any other ethnic group is inherently bad is racism and the person is a racist, but any POC saying the same about White people is at worst only "ethnically prejudiced" and excused due to the racist history of oppression against their people by the White majority. It's a wild ride, dude.
