@fidget2020 Not about ancestry - it's about which land you and your family live in and call your country today. If he'd limited it to decorating his graduation cap he probably could have done that and not had a problem. But when someone wears the actual flag of another country to an event like a graduation they have to understand that that is making a political statement just like raising a fist at the Olympics or taking a knee during the National Anthem. It's really about freedom of expression and for those of us who had the experience, we know how intolerant most schools are of students trying to express their own voice. But all of this is irrelevant. All that matters is that the kid did the work and jumped through their hoops - give him the damn diploma FFS.

As an American you do get to express yourself freely, but some forms of expression my be prohibited or seen as in bad taste in certain situations. Then, as a citizen, you can either follow the rules and respect the customs of the event or don't and experience those results. When you wear the full flag of another country to an official awards ceremony you are making a political statement. It's much the same kind of display as raising a fist at the Olympics. If he'd limited the decoration to his graduation cap or worn a flag pin on his robe it probably wouldn'ty have been an issue, but he wanted to be seen and make a statement - mission accomplished. But when it comes right down to the dirty ass truth, this is all just typical school administrator big-fish little-pond foolishness. All that matters is he did the work so he gets the diploma. Just about the only good thing about High School was being done with it.

@fidget2020 I suspect I could find other examples but tthe raised fist at the olympics is an iconic image that represented what I was saying. If you want to minimize that it happened at a High School graduation that your choice. But for me it doesn't matter if it happens at an Olympic award ceremony, the opening ceremony of a professional Basketball game, or a ceremony where someone is being awarded their diploma. Are you saying that a student who makes an unapproved political statement at their High School ceremony doesn't matter or just not as much? I'm also impressed how you can read his mind. I don't know why he did it and neither do you, but anyone who does something like that is probably doing more than just making their parents proud. Besides, he graduated - I'm sure they were already very proud of him.
