But smoking makes you look cool - dangerous; like someone who knows how to get their hands dirty and lives for the moment not worrying about what might happen tomorrow let alone in twenty or thirty years. And as a former smoker you probably remember how good it feels to have a smoke. Also, for me there was ritual around it and rituals can be comforting too. Whether it's the simple act of using fire to ignite the cigarette (a ritualistic act in itself), the after-dinner smoke or first cigarette-of-the-day, or the way I'd pack a cigarette down to make them burn more evenly - these are all rituals that help us feel more connected with the act of smoking and other smokers. There's also a camaraderie that comes from doing something that not everyone else does. That being said, smoking stinks and it would be fine with me if it became something that someone will have to grow for themself if they want to keep doing it. The only problem I have with this is that by making something as widely used globally as tobacco illegal in New Zealand you're only creating a new product for their local black markets. It makes me nervous when governments outlaw addictive substances instead of treating addiction as a problem addressed by healthcare providers and not police.
