i don’t, since, what are the chances of it turning exactly 180° and continuing to fly straight? Plus, the nozzle is designed specifically to even out such inconsistencies. My theory is that some electrical malfunction caused it to think it needed to go in the opposite direction ( some sensor failed, or a safeguard failure caused it to lock onto the ground radar ); that turn looked way too deliberate.

I don’t think it is possible. Plus, if one had uneven fuel concentration due to improper storage, would there not be other missiles with the same fault? A lot of people here seem to agree that it is a malfunction with tracking ( but a malfunction with the missile itself, not the guidance thing on the ground )

I believe it is electrical failure. I mean, you can’t improperly store just one missile. But there are plenty of sensor-related failures that could cause the rocket to think it needed to turn backwards. But you are correct that there is too little information to come to a conclusion.

This is my theory too, except that i don’t think human error can cause that ( maybe with a torpedo, but unless i misunderstand how the ground-based guidance works, how can it target itself?? )

But the long-range guidance on the ground cannot physically guide the missile into itself ( if i understand how it works ). The on-board guidance system can — it simply targets the strongest radar signal it can find — it should not be on that early, but electrical malfunction could have turned it on.

The fuel thing doesn’t sound likely. The whole point of a nozzle is to equalize the pressure and direct the gas in the wanted direction, the nozzle should even out such inconsistencies. I think it was malfunction of the electronics or some sensor, that caused the rocket to deliberately turn 180° ( that would include the on-board guidance turning on too early and locking onto the ground radar ). I mean, if it was off center thrust, what are the chances it turns exactly 180° and then continues to fly so straight.
