  2. the not sign is not used in programming because it was removed from ASCII along with a few other characters only used in programming. This lead programmers to use custom fonts which rendered unused characters like the removed ones used to be — which is how ! came to be used for negation. The pipe/broken pipe weirdness occurred for similar reason. The pipe, @, tilde, and backtick were also all moved around several times for some reason.
