  1. mad cow disease is not a virus. it is a prion, which is a protein that happened to misfold in such a way that it can stick to it’s correctly formed counterpart also misfolding it, and thus self-replicate by creating long fibers of itself. These are extremely rare, as the prion in it’s original state is unstable and will collapse to a correctly folded state, unless it happens to stick to enough of the correct thing in the correct way to stabilize the chain. ( not so fun fact: since they are structurally stable once the chain is long enough, they cannot be destroyed by any ordinary means of disinfection ) These completely blur the line between an infection and a poison.
