  2. it doesn’t have to be in-plane ambient noise. it doesn’t make sense for it to be in-plane ambient noise, as the would require the microphones to be enabled for the whole flight, which they are not. the amplifier/audio processing unit could be, and likely is, picking up noise generated by electrical issues.

  3. actually, a better explanation altogether: It is not a given that this is coming from the PA system in the first place. Someone could have positioned speakers such that it sounds like the PA system is making the noise. And of course either the crew or maintenance could just be trolling, although it is very unprofessional, things like that do happen.
