It is so amazing to see images of all these missions and probes on the surface of the moon. I am so glad to hear it has another 5 years of fuel remaining. The next step is to coordinate between the rovers on the moon currently, like the Chinese ones, and orbiting imagers like the LRO. I have no doubt that both used in conjunction can lead to amazing discoveries and increase the value of the science done by land based equipment.

Yes the US can, a hypersonic missile becomes slower than missiles from the 80's in its terminal phase. Modern current air defense systems are perfectly designed to shoot down the missile. The change hypersonics made is they can be faster than the response, however, the US and the west is completely prepared already and no additional defenses have been needed to protect against these kinds of missiles.

@wolfcrewe7474 The united states determined decades ago that subsonic stealthy missiles were preferable. Because the United States has am abundance of platforms to track targets with there is much less need for a hypersonic missile overall. Hypersonic missiles are really not at all new and this technology gap has always existed. China and Russia need hypersonics because it is highly unlikely that they maintain track against the US. The US has no such difficulties and thus hypersonic missiles are more of a niche role for the west.

@wolfcrewe7474 I really don't think you are remotely qualified to predict anything mate. You wanting it won't make it true AND ...I am not threatened by a diminishing of US global power. I'm not afraid of strong neighbors. ...and also american power is growing hugely under biden re-capturing and surpassing the success of obama's foreign policy. But if you want to convince someone that america is ruined and you are the big guy maybe don't try an old military analyst. Because I actually know how important hypersonic missiles are and what they are doing. Oniks and Kaliber proliferation is a threat that needs adaptation too. Hypersonics are a new try at an old idea and 90% of their hype is based on lies. AUKUS alone does more to counter russian and chinese power than any gain they have made in the A2/AD front. Hypersonic reentry vehicles for nuclear munitions mean that the missile defense systems have to adapt but that's already done. Hypersonic cruise missiles have not required any change in doctrine as russia had supersonic cruise missiles in the 60's. So, ... nothing has changed

@wolfcrewe7474 I call myself a military analyst because I graduated from the Army intelligence school and was an operational intelligence analyst for CJ101 in Afghanistan and in fact, it's still my career though now I'm rounding out my education in physics and military history. The standard missile was designed to intercept supersonic missiles, any cruise missile that approaches at hypersonic speed will be extremely visible, be forced to fly at very specific altitudes, and will have to slow to supersonic or subsonic speeds to make its attack run. Therefore, western cruise missiles defense has not changed. Hypersonic maneuvering re-entry vehicles ARE something that is new, typically hypersonic re entry vehicles followed a ballistic path and so were easy to predict. And so that had to be adapted to but is already well underway as per the US missile defense chief. The united States doesn't need hypersonic cruise missiles because our missiles are subsonic and stealthy, there is some interest in a hypersonic delivery system for those missiles but when it is deployed I think you will find that china and Russia won't actually need to adjust much as they have always been planning to shoot down subsonic stealthy missiles in the same way we have always been prepared for supersonic loud ones. I really don't think you understand how hypersonics work at all, how missiles work, or how current missile strategy has come about or the direction it's going in. But of you need to pretend for yourself that I must be lying because I disagree with you then fine. I'll see you in five years and we can judge who was correct in hindsight. If you don't believe me, go find other experts and see who they agree with. And I don't mean youtube variety channels and gamer military enthusiasts. I mean the people who are actively in charge of US missile defense. Hypersonic misinformation is the new "but it can't dogfight" you clearly have absolutely no idea what you are talking about

It is more expensive, more complex, and more limited and I'm the end, is not better than a regular cruise missile at these kinds of ranges. Hypersonics help mitigate range, they aren't wunderwaffe... It's like threatening to take racehorses to replace oxen. Utterly baffling

The world has not seen an environment remotely as target rich as ww2 was. If we were able to look at the data as a total percentage of effect on all combat sortie aircraft you could see how it's so dominant much more easily. More to the point, direct fire air to air dogfighting is rapidly becoming obsolescent.
